Every tennis match is different.
They’re all played under the same rules.
And every tennis player has the same goal.
But that’s really where the similarities end.
Some matches draw a crowd.
Some… don’t.
A select few are legendary.
Most feature different players.
Newcomers.
Veterans.
But some feature the same ones in a rematch of previous bouts.
And even those might have different results from year to year.
For the fan, each tennis match is like its own little world.
From the coin toss…
…to the first serve…
…to all the great plays…
…to rowdy fans…
…to arguments with the umpires…
…to the final handshake…
…and even to the post-match interview…
…it takes a lot to be involved in a match.
Only you and those who have been with you know the full story.
Newcomers can only guess at what’s already happened.
Or they can be told, but it’s not the same as actually having watched it live.
It’s a feeling of exclusivity.
But when your match ends and you try to join a new one, it’s just that much more difficult to catch up.
Bouncing between matches is not for the faint of heart or the sentimental.
That, however, is the beauty of a tennis tournament.
Each person comes away with an experience that no one else shares.
It’s impossible to know everything, and that’s the way it should be.

Nice photos! I am so jealous! You must have had amazing seats! I went to the US Open and sat in the nosebleed section.

Heh, the trick is not to stay in Ashe all the time. A lot of the grounds matches are much more interesting, even if you don’t know who the players are!

So true! We only watched one night, but I love tennis and hope to have another opportunity.
One tip- Since you’ve been Freshly Pressed, (Congrats!) you may want to put your “signature” on your photos. I add susielindau.com to mine.

I am the old generation. I saw Laver play. He had one huge arm. Extremely muscular. I saw Riggs play Billie Jean. She had a huge arm. Possibly as big as Laver’s.

Nice blog. I have no interest whatsoever in tennis, I was just observing your style of blogging. I’m checking out some bloggers because I would like to start blogging soon. Wish me luck.

Good luck. Perhaps the biggest obstacle is figuring out what you want to write about and just starting your blog, but once that’s done it’s pretty much smooth sailing from there.

This is great, but don’t you think there’s too much photos for an essay? imho..

It’s a photo essay, so I’m using the photos to tell the story instead of words. The term is a little contradictory, yes.

Nice pictures. How about coming down-under for the Australian Open. Don’t you just love the dummy spits, that is just the funniest thing to watch. You are a person of my own heart and gravitate to the outside courts, there is always so much to see amongst the sun lovers and great friends to make from all over the world. Nice to see some tennis action. B

A great idea for my creative writing students–and maybe even my English 4 kids. Often times a picture really is worth a 1,000 words.

Love your pictures, and how you describe the experience of a tennis match. I’ve been to Wimbledon but never the US Open – hopefully someday soon!

Definitely come over! In the future I’d actually like to see the other three Grand Slams live, myself.

Definitely go see! It’s much different seeing a match live than on TV, especially if you know how to play.

Awesome! I wish I had time to watch more tennis but each match is epic! (For some reason, I always like to root for the underdog. I rooted for Djokovic when he was the underdog, but I still root for him now!) 🙂
Thanks!
