Song of the Week: “Still Breathing” (Green Day)

A lot of bands lately are releasing tracks early for those who pre-order an upcoming album, and Green Day is no exception. So in advance of the imminent release of Revolution Radio, I thought I would showcase one of these tracks.

“Still Breathing” became one of my favorite Green Day songs the moment I heard it. Typoattack likened it to the alternative music that was popular in the late ’90’s and early ’00’s. I don’t think he’s wrong, but I do think there’s a distinctly “Green Day” edge to it. It doesn’t sound like your typical Green Day song, but check out the guitars in the chorus (which use the same chords heard in “Jesus of Suburbia,” mind), as well as Tré’s drumming, and it becomes pretty obvious.

If you were here for last week’s inaugural entry, you might already be able to guess one of the reasons I love this song. There’s a pretty clear and strong message here about pushing through the hard stuff and surviving it all. It’s about living through the bad times and fighting to ensure you get where you’re going. It’s about never giving up no matter how hard it is to keep going. It’s a powerful song in all respects, both an inspirational message about not giving up, and rebellious “fuck you” to everything in life that tries to bring you down. This is the song you play when you’ve decided you’re done letting all of life’s bullshit affect you and you’re ready to take back control of your life. It’s Green Day at their finest, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the rest of the album has to offer.
