Song of the Week: “Ready for the Magic” (Honeyblood)

Continuing the recent trend of featuring a song from an upcoming album, this week I present the first pre-order track from Honeyblood’s new album, Babes Never Die, which drops this Friday.

From the start, “Ready for the Magic” feels like a bit of a departure from Honeyblood’s earlier work. For one, I’m not 100% certain, but it sounds like there are two guitars, which I’m guessing were multi-tracked by Stina Tweedale, rather than played by a second guitarist. On top of that, the song is a noticeably harder rock track than I’m used to hearing from them. That’s not a bad thing, of course. The song is fun and catchy, and I like a good rock song.  And it’s also good to see some more diversity in their work. I always look at songs with a different style as a sign of range and evolution both creatively and as a band. Some people, I know, don’t agree with me there, and too much change is liable to elicit cries of “Sell outs!” But that’s definitely not the case here. It’s different, but it’s still decidedly a Honeyblood track.
