Happy Holidays, everyone, and welcome to our very special music series! For the next twelve days we’ll be showcasing a Christmas song every day leading up to Christmas, and you’re invited! Whether these songs are old favorites or completely new sonic experiences, we hope you enjoy our celebration of the holiday season!
With all due respect to Mariah Carey, I’m absolutely sick and tired of hearing her Christmas song over and over. It’s not that it’s a bad song, per se, but please, please, can we listen to anything else? So instead of boring you all (or driving myself mad) I’ve decided to open this series with a… different take on the modern classic, as it were.
When you think “Christmas music,” there are a lot of names that come to mind. “My Chemical Romance” is not one of them. And yet here we are. The punk rockers recorded this comparatively heavy version of the song for the off-beat Christmas compilation Gift Wrapped: 20 Songs That Keep On Giving, and honestly, I couldn’t be happier that they did. It’s really quite surprising that this song works so well as a hard-hitting punk track.
One of the best things about this version is the intro. Way’s soft and sweet vocals and the accompanying piano are quite deceptive, and if you’d never heard it before, you’d probably think it was just a straightforward cover.
And then, suddenly, there’s rock. And there’s no denying that from this point on, it’s entirely their song and their style. They didn’t compromise just because it’s a Christmas song; they just gave Santa a bitchin’ new sound.
I have to say, I love this kind of bait-and-switch style. It’s always a pleasant surprise when a song suddenly switches from one style to a completely different one. Compare, for instance, the two halves of Metallica’s “One.” While not as drastic or unexpected as this one, there’s definitely a clear shift. And I think that kind of surprise is really fun and exciting.
When it comes down to it, I really like this version of the song. I wouldn’t complain if every holiday playlist replaced the original with this version. No offense, Mariah, but it’s high time rock took over the Christmas airwaves.
To go along with this series, we’re creating a Spotify playlist of the songs we’re discussing here. It’ll be just like having a 13/31 Christmas album! Except, you know, not written or performed by us.
